Calculating Your Leather Yield & Requirements

Please consider the following when choosing your leather requirements:

  • Rule of Thumb :
1 Linear Fabric Yard (54" width) = 18 sq. ft. of Leather
  • Count on 30% wastage per hide (average usable area is 52" wide x 72" long)
  • Average Dragonfly hide size is 52 - 54 sq. ft
  • Always consult your upholsterer to discuss your leather requirements
  • Check sample card or website for technical details specific to each leather article prior to ordering

Unlike most other upholstery materials, leather is a product that is processed and delivered in its natural form. This means that each leather hide may vary in size, thickness, colour, finish, grain, and overall appearance. Certain leather articles (semi-aniline and pigmented leather) are more consistent in all attributes than the most natural articles (such as aniline leather). You may also encounter natural flaws such as healed scars, brands, and other marks that add to the character and patina of your leather, but may reduce your usable yield from a hide if these flaws are to be excluded. Occasionally some flaws are removed resulting in small holes in random locations.

All of these factors affect the "usable yield" of each hide of leather. As a general rule, the higher the quality (and price level), the cleaner the hides are because they come from the best possible raw material with the least amount of flaws. Keep in mind when choosing leather suppliers that one quality hide may yield as much usable leather as two inexpensive, lower quality hides. That's why Dragonfly Leather uses only premium European cowhides.
